Automated Assembly

For McAlpine Plumbing and Co

For our masters level industrial design project, I and a team of three others were approached by McAlpine Plumbing to design an automated assembly system.

The manual process assembled two components by hand to form a bath trap. This assembly operation has had significant limitations. These include time, batch size, labour allocations, and potential repetitive strain issues.

1. Handling

Parts move up an elevator feeder into a hopper…

2. Orientation

…then down a bespoke gravity alignment chute…

3. Assembly

…and finally are combined with the other component.
